Humouring the newsbies
“The military coup got under way rather inchoately Friday evening and appears to most seasoned observers within Turkey to be oddly half-fledged and badly planned. The internet and broadcast outlets were not fully secured by the plotters and the curfew so ineffectively imposed that the ruling AK Party’s leaders were able to call for street demonstrations which then ensued.
Didn’t it start with two road blocks that were enforced in a rather relaxed manner?
“A great many Turks view the events suspiciously, not least the incompetence of the coup itself. There’s a good deal of murmuring that it was a staged or provoked coup, easily quelled, with a view to strengthening Erdoğan’s bid for increased power. Normally coups hit the ground late at night when everyone’s asleep so that by morning the military has secured strategic areas without a media hue and cry. This one went off at peak TV viewing hours. And while the media was spottily secured, the internet almost not at all. Politicians normally get rounded up first, again usually in the early morning hours; that didn’t happen on this occasion.
But that bad FaceTime moment, Red Zap!
Isn’t that DOUBT just naggin’?
